LAKE ERIE MULTIHULLS 2009

Lake Erie Gary Hall Series, GLMRA Series, and other schedules:

Way back in 1997, Fred Babson and Mark Kelly pitched the concept of the Western Erie Sailing Association to promote the sport of sailing for both Cruising and Racing sailors.  The WESail Series culminated in individual championships for each fleet, including a championship for Multihulls. Boats from across the shores of Lake Erie, from Detroit to Cleveland, participated in these events.  Lake Erie Multihulls borrowed their moniker for our own race series and a single-handed multihull sailor, Ray Mason III and his company, Columbus Truck and Equipment answered the call to sponsor all the First-to-Finish Flags and the Multihull Championship, donating a flag we called the Top Dog Flag. Ray was our benefactor for 5 years.

Jim Heron, Product Rep for Mike’s Hard Lemonade, stepped forward in 2002 as the sponsor for all the First-to- Finish Flags for the Point-to-Point Races like the Mills Race, Sandusky Is. Race, Green Is. Race, etc.

Now we have another benefactor, Gary Hall, who generously donated a sum of money, which we will use to sponsor the Multihull Championship.  We’re looking for a Perpetual Trophy, and of course, there will be a championship flag.  We’ve renamed the series the Gary Hall Series.

Below you will find a tentative schedule for the 2009 series.  Your five best races out of the nine designated races will count toward the series with at least one race from each of the three regions; East, West and Central.   I-LYA Bay Week Regatta, Fall Bay Regatta and the Trans-Erie Race will count as either East or West.

GREAT LAKES MULTIHULL RACING ASSOCIATION 2009

Traveler Series

In 2005, Offshore Multihull Sailor and generous sponsor, Gary Hall, purchased a beautiful trophy (A huge brass bell on a stand) which was to be used as a perpetual trophy for the Gary Hall Series, here on Lake Erie.  Jim Frederick and I won it on Big Storm the first year.  But we felt that we needed to expand the purpose of this trophy.

In 2006, we rededicated the Gary Hall Perpetual Trophy to GLMRA for the GLMRA Multihull Traveler Series.  The name, GLMRA, is already engraved on the bell. This will be like the LEM Gary Hall Series in that the winning skipper must be a member of GLMRA and would have to have the lowest point score for the series.  Your best 4 races out of the 8 designated races will count toward the series. This series includes the Mills Race, Mac Solo Challenge, TMCC Regatta, Chicago Mac, Lake Ontario 300, Port Huron Mac, Youngstown Levels, Trans-Erie Race, Great Lake Champs and the Green Island Race.  Such a series requires the recipient to travel and support the other races in the series.  These races were picked because there was wide range of GLMRA certificate holders participating. In order that your score be counted, there must be at least 3 GLMRA Certificate Holders participating in the event.

Gary Hall also donated a smaller version of the Bell as a Keeper Trophy.   The winner of the GLMRA Traveler Series will get his name/boat name engraved on the perpetual trophy and he will be awarded the GLMRA Keeper Trophy.

Below you will find the schedule for the 2009 series.  Your four best races out of the eight designated races will count toward the series with at least one race from each of the three regions; East, West and Central.  The Mills Race, Great Lake Champs and Green Island Race will count as either East or West.

Subject: Chicago Mac Entries - calling all multihulls

Hey everybody,

Today was a "rip your face off" market ralley, so how about jumping on the good mood band wagon and entering the 2009 Chicago Mac Race on July 18th?  To date we have 255 total entries and are expecting another strong mutltihull turnout. Expect total entries in the mid 300's.  A couple of changes from last year:

Multihulls may now enter doublehanded (subject to meeting stringent experience requirements.  LOA minimum is now 24 feet, although boats under 26 feet may not sail with more than two.  If there are enough multihull entries to warrant, doublehanded may be split into their own section.  See the NOR and Safety regs for complete details and special Doublehanded requirements.

to enter or request an invitation go to http://racetomac.nemixinc.com

Current safety regs are there as well, only changes this year are some limited additions for Doublehanded Entries.

Regards,

Lake Huron

Bayview Yacht Club and Chicago Yacht Club To Stage Super Mac in 2009

Website for registration will be posted April 9th

Bayview Yacht Club and Chicago Yacht Club are announcing that they will jointly sponsor a 490 nautical mile sailing race known as the "Super Mac" in July of 2009.  The start of the Super Mac will coincide with the start of the 101st Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac on July 18, 2009.  The Super Mac will finish in Port Huron, Michigan, and serve as a feeder race for the 85th sailing of the Bayview Mackinac Race, which will start on July 25, 2009.  Port Huron Yacht Club, located in Port Huron, Michigan, will provide critical logistical support for the Super Mac.

Mack Super MackThe Super Mac was last run in 2000, starting in Port Huron and ending in Chicago.  This year, the Super Mac will reverse course, beginning in Chicago, up Lake Michigan, through the finish line of the Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac, cross to the north of Bois Blanc Island and continuing on through Lake Huron. The Super Mac will finish in front of the Acheson Venture's Maritime Center at the intersection of the Black and St. Clair Rivers and across from the Port Huron Yacht Club in Port Huron, Michigan.

"The 'Super Mac' will offer a unique challenge to sailors around the world," Frank Kern, Chairman of the Bayview Mackinac Race, noted.  "This 490 nautical mile event will be the world's longest and most challenging freshwater race in 2009," Kern added.  "We are proud to collaborate with Bayview Yacht Club on the 2009 Super Mac," Greg Miarecki, Chairman of the Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac, noted.

All entries must be officially entered and participate in the Chicago Race to Mackinac to qualify for the Super Mac. Registration will begin April 9th. A link to the registration website and notice of race will be provided at www.chicagoyachtclub.org/racetomackinac and www.byc.com/mack. The entry fee will be $135 per yacht to cover incidentals and flags.

Sponsorship Opportunities Still Available

Bayview Port Huron Mackinac Committee Still Looking For Sponsors that Want to Reach that Higher End Demographic Group

A CEO of a fortune 100 corporation was reported reported as saying, "I was never inclined to pump big sums of money into sports marketing until I saw the facts and the numbers. In general terms, for every dollar we spend on sports marketing, we get $10 in revenue and $3 in earnings. This is not wasted money."  Even in a difficult economy there still are people with disposable income that are brand loyal:

  • 92% of our participants hold a college degree
  • 41% have ownership in a business
  • 58% own or lease 1 or 2 vehicles and 42% own or lease 3 or more vehicles
  • 85% have a net worth over $100,000

  • 92% own one or more residences
  • 72% stated they would buy a sponsor's products or services

A variety of sponsorship packages are available for corporations that desire to effect a positive impression on this hard to access group. Extensive radio and television Mission Point Partexposure would create brand awareness for your company and sales. The media reach for coverage of the race is in over 300 newspaper and magazine articles. Website and internet reach to more than 1 million web page views.

The 1935 Port Huron to Mackinac Race

Through the depression the race continued
"On the way to the 85th sailing"
  Mack Trident
The race hit a high of 20 yachts by 1928 but in 1929 when the depression started to dig in the entry list dwindled down to 13. That same year the Bayview clubhouse burned down on Motorboat Lane putting further financial strain on the organization. By 1930 entries climbed a little with the entry of BYC Commodore Alger Sheldon's Trident, a new John Alden built yawl specifically to win the Mackinac Race. With her long overhangs and sprit she was ideal for Great Lakes sailing. And she showed it by taking the race overall two years in a row in mostly light air with a few squalls thrown in and later winning two more Mackinacs in her class.

In 1933 it was decided that spinnakers were banned for the sake of safety and most likely for just being too expensive in those poor economic times. In the early thirties although the gaff rigs were being replaced by marconi rigs, heavy cotton sails were still being used. By 1935 the economy improved and the desire to spice up the race resulted in a course change that would involve the rounding the Cove Island Light located off a small Canadian island. To quote Commodore Esmond Avery, "a 306 mile course...would discourage shore sailing, put a premium on navigation ability, and make a sportier race. The barking dog - apple tree method of navigation, employed now, will be at an end." The opponents to this course Perc Williamson and Race Chairman Trent McMath felt the opposite, "Such a course would present hazards possibly dangerous to men and ship, and would interupt, if not erase, the tradition of past Mackinac races." While this would not be the last time this argument would surface the Commodore won his effort for the new course. However he appeased McMath by outlawing the use of high tech radio direction finders which cost hundreds of dollars and were beyond the pocketbooks of many boat owners. Mack Alsumar

This race was started with 16 yachts in a light southerly breeze. Alsumar, newly purchased by David Sloss and Herm Petzold steered a rhumb line course to the Cove Island Light and rounded Sunday afternoon with a ten mile lead. The next morning a dense fog and a calm beseiged the fleet but Alsumar continued to move like a ghost in the straits. At 1400 hours on Tuesday with the rest of fleet becalmed Alsumar got the gun, winning class B and the fleet overall. The rest of the fleet drifted in for the next two days and this course was not sailed again until 1972.
