LAKE ERIE MULTIHULLS 2011

Gary Hall Series

Way back in 1997, Fred Babson and Mark Kelly pitched the concept of the Western Erie Sailing Association to promote the sport of sailing for both Cruising and Racing sailors.  The WESail Series culminated in individual championships for each fleet, including a championship for Multihulls. Boats from across the shores of Lake Erie, from Detroit to Cleveland, participated in these events.  Lake Erie Multihulls borrowed their moniker for our own race series and a single-handed multihull sailor, Ray Mason III and his company, Columbus Truck and Equipment answered the call to sponsor all the First-to-Finish Flags and the Multihull Championship, donating a flag we called the Top Dog Flag. Ray was our benefactor for 5 years.

Now we have another benefactor, Gary Hall, who generously donated a sum of money, which we will use to sponsor the Multihull Championship.  We’re looking for a Perpetual Trophy, and of course, there will be a championship flag.  We’ve renamed the series the Gary Hall Series.

Below you will find a tentative schedule for the 2011 series.  Your five best races out of the nine designated races will count toward the series with at least one race from each of the three regions; East, West and Central.   I-LYA Bay Week Regatta, Fall Bay Regatta and the Trans-Erie Race will count as either East or West.

GREAT LAKES MULTIHULL RACING ASSOCIATION 2011

Traveler Series (Preliminary)

In 2005, Offshore Multihull Sailor and generous sponsor, Gary Hall, purchased a beautiful trophy (A huge brass bell on a stand) which was to be used as a perpetual trophy for the Gary Hall Series, here on Lake Erie.  Jim Frederick and I won it on Big Storm the first year.  But we felt that we needed to expand the purpose of this trophy.

In 2006, we rededicated the Gary Hall Perpetual Trophy to GLMRA for the GLMRA Multihull Traveler Series.  The name, GLMRA, is already engraved on the bell. This will be like the LEM Gary Hall Series in that the winner of the GLMRA Traveler Series must be a member of GLMRA. The criteria is different for 2011, in that we will be using a high point scoring system and thus giving greater weight to races which have more participation.  Your best 4 races out of the 9 designated races will count toward the series. This series includes the Mills Race, Queens Cup, TMCC Regatta, Chicago Mac, Lake Ontario 300, Port Huron Mac, Youngstown Levels, Great Lake Champs and the Green Island Race.  In order that your score be counted, there must be at least 3 GLMRA Certificate Holders participating in the event.

Gary Hall also donated a smaller version of the Bell as a Keeper Trophy.   The winner of the GLMRA Traveler Series will get his name/boat name engraved on the perpetual trophy and he will be awarded the GLMRA Keeper Trophy.

Below you will find the schedule for the 2011 series.  Your four best races out of the eight designated races will count toward the series with at least one race from each of the three regions; East, West and Central.  The Mills Race, Great Lake Champs and Green Island Race will count as either East or West.
